In the Oil&Gas industry many processes require centrifugal pumps and compressors to supply variable values of pressure and flow rate; this can be achieved with various advantages through speed regulation, which is feasible through different driver concepts, briefly compared in the present work. Special focus is set on hydrodynamics combined with fixed speed electric motors as a variable speed drive, on their functional principle, and, besides the most traditional devices, on the variable speed epicyclic gear Vorecon. The work shows their capability to integrate several functions in one single device, with space and weight saving, their protective behavior, as well as their simplicity, which is reflected in highest reliability, easy integration in the plant, and low life cycle cost.
